Tuning Vusic for Beats
If Vusic does not appear to be responding to beats effectively, then try the
following adjustments:
Changing the Listening Frequency
To change the listening frequency, open the Frequency panel by selecting "Frequency..."
from the Settings popup menu. You will see a spectrograph that displays the
amplitudes for a range of frequencies from 20 to 524 hertz. The spectrograph
will animate if music is playing and Vusic is listening to an active sound channel.
The slider beneath the spectrograph indicates the current listening frequency
that Vusic is using to filter the beats. You can study the spectrograph to see
the location of the peaks when the beats occur. Drag the slider to the location
where the peaks are most prominent.
Making Vusic More Sensitive to the Frequency
Vusic filters out all but the largest peaks when listening to a certain frequency.
You can reduce this threshhold by dragging the sensitivity slider in the BEAT
METER panel. By dragging the slider to the right, you allow smaller peaks to
register as beats. If you drag it too far to the right, you will notice that
every minor fluctuation will trigger a beat.
Widening the Frequency Range
The spectrograph is mathematically calculated by analyzing the waveform of the
music. A number of sound samples are analyzed to create the graph. The fewer
the samples, the more generalized the graph. The advantage of fewer samples
is that frequencies don't have to fall within a narrow range. The peaks become
much wider. You can adjust the sample size by typing the letter "N"
preceded by a number from 1 to 11. The number 1 means that 100 samples are used.
The number 11 means that 1100 samples are used. Type "3N" and watch
how the spectrograph changes. Then type "9N" and see what happens.
The larger the number, the more processing time is needed to perform the calculations.
Click the "Default" button to restore the sample size to the factory
setting, which is 600 samples.
