CD-ROM Issues

External CD-ROM Drives

If your speakers are attached directly to your external CD-ROM drive, Vusic won't work correctly because the sound is bypassing the sound card. The sound must pass through the sound card for Vusic to work. You need to attach a cable between the CD-ROM drive's external audio connectors and the computer's microphone jack. You will also need to change your sound input channel to the microphone channel. On the Macintosh, you may need to set the sound input channel to the "Sound In" channel. You can change sound inputs in Vusic by clicking the Current Input popup in the SOUND INPUT Panel.

Multiple CD-ROM Drives

If you have multiple CD-ROM drives, you can tell Vusic which drive to use for playing CDs. In the CD panel, open the "Drive" popup menu. This menu will list all CD-ROM drives that are available. On Windows, this will be a list of drive letters. On a Macintosh, this will be a list of loaded Audio CD numbers or CD drive reference numbers. Select the drive to make it the current drive for playing CDs. When you change drives, you will also need to change the sound input channel that is associated with that drive.

Windows: If only one drive has a CD inserted, then Vusic will play that CD regardless of what drive letter has been set. Otherwise, Vusic will look for a CD in the drive that was used last time. The first time Vusic is run, it will use the drive that has been set in the Multimedia Control Panel under the CD Music tab if there are no CDs present or more than one CD present.

Macintosh: The first time Vusic is run, Vusic will play the audio CD with the lowest number, if one or more audio CDs are detected. Otherwise, Vusic will use the first CD-ROM drive it finds. This setting will be used for all subsequent sessions until it is changed again by the user.

Non-Apple CD-ROM on a Macintosh

If you have a non-Apple CD-ROM drive, it is likely that you are not using the standard Apple CD driver. Vusic does not support all drivers. The only other driver that is supported is the driver developed by Software Architects, Inc. This driver works with almost every possible CD-ROM drive. To see if you are using their driver, look in your Extensions folder in your System folder and see if there is a file named "D2 CD Init" or "CD/DVD TuneUp Init." If not, then you will need to purchase the driver from them. Currently, the driver is part of a bundle called "CD/DVD Drive Tuneup" which retails for $59.95. Go to www.softarch.com/us/products/cdtu.html to find out more. We are considering working out a deal with Software Architects to make just the driver available for less expense. Let us know if you would be interested in such an arrangement.
